Peripheral blood smear is an important part of the diagnostic work-up for patients. It is a basic and simple test to perform and available in most laboratories. However, it relies heavily on the skill and ability of the reader to recognize the normal and abnormal forms of blood cells. It also requires good knowledge of clinical data available and the capacity to correlate these data together with other tests such as automated CBC with red cell indices or iron studies. One of the challenges lies in the marked variation in the evaluation of smears all over the country, together with the need to improve the skills of the readers.
This seminar workshop is especially designed for medical technologists, pathology trainees, doctors from other specialties and pathologists who perform interpretation of peripheral blood smears. The invited Hematopathologists will share their knowledge and expertise on how to properly read a blood smear starting from the right slide preparation up to reporting. The topics shall also cover review of the spectrum from normal to atypical or dysplastic to abnormal blood cells.
